Calcium nitride is a brown nitride powder made up of calcium and nitrogen. It is a flammable solid that should be kept away from open flames and in a dry environment.

Calcium nitride is used in the production of a variety of materials, including phosphors for LED lights. Various isomorphous forms of the compound exist, allowing for a wide range of possible uses.

In addition to its primary use as a raw material for high-end phosphors, calcium nitride also serves as a nitride source for chemical reactions. Nitrides can be reacted with metal oxides, which will reduce their concentration and thus make them more readily available for use in many applications.

The two most common forms of a calcium nitride are -calcium nitride and a-calcium nitride. Both are produced by the reaction of elemental calcium in a nitrogen stream. However, the a-calcium nitride form is much more common.

When nitrides are heated with hydrogen at temperatures above 350 degC, they undergo hydrolysis to produce ammonia. This is why nitrides are essential as storage materials for hydrogen. While hydrogen is nonpolluting, its safe to use, and a renewable energy source, there are precautions that need to be taken to keep it safe.

During storage, a harmless water byproduct is produced. Several methods are used to store hydrogen. These include using a fuel cell, or making it from renewable energy sources. For example, solar or wind power can be used to generate hydrogen.
