ammonium octamolybdate is used in the plastic industry as smoke suppressant and flame retardant. It is mainly suited for use in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and is available as a white to off-white powder.

ammonium octamolybdate can be obtained by a wet chemical process from ammonium nitrate and octamolybdate in a suitable ratio. It is odorless, non-toxic and has good fire-retardant properties. It is widely used in the production of plastics such as PVC and is also utilised in agriculture and the petroleum industry.

In recent years, research on molybdenum compounds as flame retardant and smoke suppressors has been in the infancy in China. However, there has been progress in the development of this material and a number of innovative applications have been reported.

Several studies have reported the synthesis and characterization of different molybdenum compounds based on ammonium octamolybdate. These include, a polymeric compound with improved fire-retardant and wear-resistant properties. The compounds can be applied to high temperature polymerization chemistry and the preparation of foamed asphalts.

The production of fine ammonium octamolybdate-alpha has been improved using a new method in which fine molybdic oxide is added to an aqueous solution of ammonium molybdate in substantially a stoichiometric amount and the solution is heated at an oxidizing temperature sufficient to provide substantial thickening. The slurry is then digested, filtered and dried to yield fine ammonium octamolybdate-alpha of high purity.

The REACH Molybdenum Consortium is actively working to gather/generate/compile all the necessary data for the REACH registration dossier for this substance. As part of this, we have launched the Substance Identification and Exposure Evaluation Forum (SIEF), which is responsible for collecting and evaluating the relevant data that must be included in the REACH registration dossier.
